IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service Provides Tax Assistance at No Cost

Taxpayers facing a hardship who cannot resolve their tax problems through normal means can contact the IRS for tax help. Here's how.

Tax problems are a fact of life for many taxpayers. With confusing tax forms and documents the taxpayer is forced to complete, many wish they could get some much-needed tax relief.

Thankfully, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has made it easy for taxpayers to get their tax problems addressed. Their tax assistance program is called the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, and it’s totally free for qualifying taxpayers to receive the tax help they need.

Who Can Receive Tax Help from the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service?

IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service provides confidential, free, and independent tax assistance to taxpayers who cannot resolve their tax problems through normal means. Taxpayers experiencing hardship can also receive tax help from the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.

How Does the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service Work?

The taxpayer who needs tax help calls, writes, or faxes their local IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service. Alternatively, the taxpayer can complete a Form 911, available for download from the IRS website.

How to Find IRS Help via IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service

For taxpayers who are experiencing tax problems and hardship, tax relief via IRS help is a mouse click away. Here’s how to get that much-needed tax relief:

  1. Point the web browser to the IRS website. The IRS website displays and shows numerous links to tax help and tax services.
  2. In the Information About section at the bottom of the IRS home page, click Taxpayer Advocate Service. The Taxpayer Advocate Service page displays, showing numerous links describing the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.
  3. If the taxpayer would like to learn more about the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, click any of the links on the page. For example, clicking Taxes – Responsibilities and Benefits! displays the Taxes – Responsibilities and Benefits! page where the taxpayer can click a link to the IRS Tax Toolkit. Also included is information on low income taxpayer clinics.
  4. Click Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service!. The Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service! page displays, showing links and phone numbers to the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.
  5. Next to Taxpayers in the 48 contiguous States, Alaska and Hawaii, click View Local Taxpayer Advocates by State. The Contact a Local Taxpayer Advocate page displays, showing a map of the United States.
  6. Click the taxpayer’s state of residence. The Contact a Local Taxpayer Advocate (LTA) in (State) page displays. The taxpayer will see a table showing the city, address, phone number, and fax number to his or her Local Taxpayer Advocate.
  7. Contact the IRS Local Taxpayer Advocate by phone, mail, or fax. If the taxpayer needs assistance, the main phone number to the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service is 1-800-829-4059.
  8. The taxpayer who needs tax help can also complete a Form 911, available as a PDF download from the IRS website. The form can then be mailed or faxed back to the IRS.

For taxpayers who are experiencing hardship and need tax help, tax relief is close at hand with the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.

All the taxpayer needs to do in order to receive tax help is to locate their IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service office and write, call, fax, or complete a Form 911 and they’re on their way to tax relief. And best of all, it’s totally free.
